Christina Chong, Welcome to open pike night.

Christina Chong:

Oh my god, you guys gonna make me cry! I thought this was meant to be a funny thing.

Cameron:

There's a Rocket Man joke in there. Yeah.

Christina Chong:

Oh my god. Wow.

Cameron:

So I'm gonna have to talk to Michael about disparaging the ballad of

John T Bolds:

That is a classic Michael a classic.

Cameron:

Thank you so much.

Christina Chong:

Wow, I'm so happy to be here, guys. Yeah,

John T Bolds:

thank you for being here. It's wonderful to talk to you again. We for a few minutes. And last time we met you were telling us about how your lawn and we will delve a little more into that today. But we have more going to start us off with your career trajectory.

Cameron:

Yeah, let's let's go way back because it sounds like at a pretty early performing arts. So I'm just always curious, like, where did that bug come to perform?

Christina Chong:

Yeah, so I, I was in dance class from about age four. My mum herself. At about two or three, but her mother, my grandmother didn't want to hassle of driving and picking her up and all of that. But my mom absolutely loved she was like, I'm all out. I'm taking her wherever she needs to go. I'll wait my mom just, you know, it was kind of a lost dream. And so I would regularly go, nights a week. And then it became, like, pretty serious about age 10-11. When I a week, entering competitions, and doing quite well. So it was at that point, I when I was about 12-11. And I had seen on TV, a TV show, kids TV show about a it's called now, but I wrote the BBC in the UK and asked them where my favorite trained not expecting to get a letter back. But they sent me a letter back whoever it was, I forget. And she went to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre there. So we found that they were doing a summer school in London for I think it teachers in drama, singing, and dance. And then at the end of the week, there's parents to come watch. And at that summer school. Oh my gosh, I loved it so of the school, my mom also and she said, Look, you I think you have what it the school, you'd kind of have to start this. This next home coming, which would even. Would you like to audition? We have auditions in I think I think the week or something crazy like that. And I had zero audition material ready. My but she said, Okay, you can go an audition. So I went and I, with my dance monologue helped me You know, I think I had a dance that I could use. And I also Oh, my God is quite appropriate, actually. Was that part of this world?

Cameron:

Right, what the monologue was from, oh my gosh, what was the

Christina Chong:

I don't actually maybe just I do like, a Lady Macbeth thing. I know, just plucking something from from anywhere I could. Went down to London, train. Because at that point, we were living in the north of England. And we know, it's very rare that she would say this on the day, but in the meeting but we had, I think four weeks until the term would start. And on the train back. like, what we don't have the money to send you is like three and a half over 10,000 pounds, which at that time would have been about what $20,000 And distraught. And I remember distinctly remember, you know, absolutely. Being in mom everyday mom with there's gotta be a way there's got to be a way to do this. okay, she put together this little folder of all the competitions that I'd I'd had gained and sent it off to local businesses. And, and somebody came back the term starting saying that they would pay for the for that year. And I was school. But the thing is, you had to get the uniform from Harrods, which, as I'm the most expensive store in London. So yeah, that's where I started. And so it performing art school and studying a variety of different music styles and Well, Christina, you

Cameron:

just set up the next question perfectly.

John T Bolds:

Yes, you did. Here's our caller Mark

Engineer Mark:

HI, open pike night. This is engineer mark, and welcome to Chrissy time with the guys on the show.

Christina Chong:

Yeah,

Engineer Mark:

last year, you did a benefit for the shepherd street trust in, I'd like to ask if you could talk on how you went from that 13 year old with artist you are today. It's something I'm very curious to hear more of. I'm for you live long and prosper. Oh, thank

Christina Chong:

you, Mark, thank you so much for that question. So yes, as I street trust was my mom she'd she'd written off to them. And they ended up it that I was there, I think they paid for two whole years of my study. And musical theater. That's what I wanted. I saw a career on the West End, maybe first musical theater gig. When I was about 18. When I graduated from Italian was Aida written by Elton John and Tim Rice. And it was in Germany. So I went in in Deutsch.

John T Bolds:

It's easy language to

Christina Chong:

express, ambition, Deutsch, abba, abba. No, not really.

Jesse:

She's coming for your job Uhura.

Christina Chong:

Watch out. So I then realized after doing that musical, that I didn't want to do dancer, you know, your ensemble, you got to get in two hours before everyone else you know, go from the right on the, you know, it's third from the right at the the lead roles, you know, where, where they get to act and do everything and into film and TV, build my profile. And then hopefully, I can jump back into makes sense to me. Let me go do that. So I went and trained at Strasburg, the New York for a year and you know, got my series acting head on and then came back because of my I think my my heritage being part Chinese part English, then difficult for people to place me you're Caucasian, you're to Caucasians pay play Caucasian. And back then obviously was a different time. But I struggled them to see me as me my energy. So, so yeah, so. So once I started getting and bigger. And it was it was actually a TV commercial, a Shell Oil TV pounds a year for four years that that was the beginning of me earning a living mental attitude, I had to change my mental attitude that has had a lot to do positive. You know, the law of attraction, that kind of thing. I'm very the galaxy is very apt for Star Trek. But I yeah, I really did a lot of work place i the work just came in and didn't stop, which I'm very grateful for. Very

Cameron:

Well, I'm taking my daughter to ballet classes. So hopefully she's on I think. Yeah, I'm sure.

Christina Chong:

Yeah,

John T Bolds:

yeah. I used to work for BP. So I gotta end this interview right question from our next caller. Mariah.

Mariah:

Hi, open pike night. It's Mariah. And oh, my goodness. Christina the guys and answer our questions. Thank you so much for being here. You've said dancing career because of an injury and you eventually pivoted to acting. And I about that time in your life and how you dealt with any feelings of loss that may something that you thought was going to be your life path. I relate to that. And to that in various ways, and I'd love to hear anything that you have to share long and prosper.

Christina Chong:

Thanks, Mariah. So good job I didn't cover that section in the that's exactly was that was actually a bigger factor in the whole equation. I mixture of I think, wear and tear, but also, because when you dance, especially same side. And then less, you're aware of training the other side as well, other side, then one side of your body is all I remember, had to do this big up by my ear. And it was on the same side, eight shows a week, for over a other side, what's happening to your body. And now if I'd have gone if I was time travel, let's go there later. But I probably could have prevented it if I'd my body. But yeah, I'd I was having to have, you know, time off work. And I was anymore. This isn't fun. It's not, it's not my parks. And so I had to tell my dedicated my mum was to taking me to dance classes several nights a week, Was it a Ford Fiesta or something like really tiny little banged up car. So don't know, I'm always breaking down. And with my siblings in the back, and would already have bought like some sandwiches with us to eat in the car. me, and then we drive back, you know. I mean, it's not just my mom is my whole journey. Couldn't have done it without them all of them. So then I had to tell And I was it was really devastating because of everything she put into it. I well as myself in some way. Because I was taking a bet on something that off. I could have gone into this acting, like throwing my musical theater career worked. But luckily it did. And she's very happy about it now. But yeah, I was something in me that was saying no. And I think things always happen for a it like that because you've got a choice, right? Either you just mourn the in it and overcome it. And I think because of my parents their mentalities well get up, move on. Let's keep going. So, yeah, it was hard. But I think with looking at good things, the silver linings and writing those down because writing it two reading it. And obviously other thing that you're doing this goes in four times more than if you just think it. So yes, you're thinking it. So yeah, and it's you know, I we control our thoughts. Ultimately what we can of discipline I guess to Yeah,

Cameron:

well, we do have some more fun questions coming up. Don't worry. Yeah. got it. We gotta get we gotta get the you know the foundation down.

Christina Chong:

Exactly. Yeah, there we go. So we

John T Bolds:

have a two caller call here from Matt and Spock.

Platty:

Hello, this is plenty M three, aka net. I'm calling in with a friend of First off my question for you is all things being equal on cast crew and pieces like of kings and prophets, futuristic sci fi like Star Trek, or contemporary times? Now? I do have my dog here with me. His name is Spock. and he has a couple of questions for Runa that he hopes you can answer. The So I'm going to be his Uhura here. What special treats did Runa get on set when Runa ever consider changing her instagram username from Runa Ewok to this out. Is Runa single Okay I think we're just gonna sign off here. Thank hang out with the open pike

Christina Chong:

Runey come here What's this? What's this? Come on? Come on I think we can get a Runa sound normally she does it but let me just try Greenie here she's really sleepy. Sorry, spock I've just I've just bathed her so she's we'll see she gets up. I'll try get a sorry, spock. You'll have to look you so much for your questions, and for making me laugh. So I think genre wise, And that's why I love Star Trek so much is because I get to do the princess four of this season, as well, again, that's kind of got like a medieval feel lot of sci fi I love that. Also, action I love and the contemporary stuff like yeah, I think I just want to, I just have a real strong desire to do all of things and like, you know, I mean, what is a genre that I haven't done? I a rom com right? I kind of but I hadn't before that episode. Yeah, I just want out of the all the kinds of genres that we've covered with Strange New Worlds

Cameron:

Mine too.

Christina Chong:

I mean, yeah, I mean, when when Would yeah when would you ever huge dress and have my dog with me?

Cameron:

That was the reason I was able to get my daughter to watch Star Trek beautiful princess. Come check out her dress.

Christina Chong:

Oh my god. That's amazing. Oh, she liked your dress a lot. special fish. She loves fish fishes her think salmon, whitefish. Those are her instagram name to tribble? Runa, what are we thinking? She's giving me the she is she single? Yes, but it feels like maybe you're not her type spock.

John T Bolds:

Oh, no.

Jesse:

You got to take the shot.

Christina Chong:

Yeah, you got to shoot your shot.

Cameron:

Did I'm sure this has been covered somewhere. But how did Runa get

Christina Chong:

So it was my makeup artist who because I started this you know and boredom of being in the same apartment for two weeks. And and personality? Okay, she probably wants to be in the show. So let me let me start became like a bit of a joke thing. And then my makeup artist was like, Why

Cameron:

oh, shoot your shot.

Christina Chong:

Yeah, she sure. So I did. And I asked Chris Fisher, our can act. But director producer Chris Fisher. And he's like, is this like a behind me. And she was like, and she's like, we all want Runa in the show. Henry. So then Henry was asked, and then Henry asked in Onitra, who was writing the episode came out and I saw runa his name, and I was like, Oh, my God. This

Cameron:

She could she hit her marks . Is She a good actress?

Christina Chong:

I will tell you that episode, none of us kind of really knew hitting them up because like, it's a new character. And you know, we we didn't were all kind of saying to each other if you've got any feet, like, what were we all out? Like kind of children's storybook? You know, over the top? Are doing? and also, I don't know, nobody knew if they were doing it right or not. And nobody got the feedback. But then Amanda, the director started walking is. Here's my feedback. Yeah. And so she walks over she's Oh, Christina. I just good, no. Wow. Anyway, never mind.

Jesse:

Well, before we jump into our second segment, which is mostly focused one more call from Angie.

Angie:

Hi, open mic night. This is Angie, welcome. And thank you, really enjoying your performances and La'an's journey, and also looking and out of Star Trek. What would your dream musical film or theater role be?

Christina Chong:

Thank you. Angie says very easy. I would play what actually Velma Kelly in Chicago. Now, I would put Roxie Hart first just because it's kind musical for you know, three month run. I don't I don't necessarily want to do it drop in, do it and drop out. Yeah, that's been my dream role, like since I year actually, when we went to New York for the premiere, I wasn't working two bit sooner than everybody else. And my acting coach Ivana Chubbuck worked with on Broadway, and managed to get me a ticket how seats to go watch Pamela like, Oh, my goodness, it's all kind of coming. 360 Everything you know, and bringing music into my life. And I say, Oh, my goodness, maybe this is within would be my dream dream role. And I'd love to do like a new musical as well. original.

Cameron:

Twin Flames, the musical. Oh,

Christina Chong:

my God, don't get me. God's

Cameron:

Yeah, let's start with the writing. What is your writing process

Christina Chong:

So I didn't know what my writing process was when it comes to ever done this, right. So I put the word out to, you know, a few people, I talked about wanting to do this. And so it was my manager who introduced me to a guy, a really great advice. He said, Don't sign with anybody straightaway. Go out and learn the process, learn what you're about what your sound is. Don't sign room, go in without any preconceived ideas. Just go into the room and let it brilliant pieces of advice. And he introduced me to produce a Euro nivo, tracks with him. And he's worked with like Sia, sugar, babes Girls Allowed. stylist. By the way, I love her. By the way, she'd never heard me sing. She had a feeling. And she and she was like, Oh, I have a friend who's a singer, or just talk. And I think she's a great singer songwriter. She'd be able to give Amazing. Perfect. So her name is Olga. She's brilliant. She put me in touch Anouk was like, Whoa, do you have any demos? I had one demo. I sent it to her. demo. So from way back so I was like are this is in character. It's not really a said, Oh, are you free to speak? Cool now? I was like you Yeah, so she, we she's at all my fiance Jake is here as well, we'd love you to come down to the this Jake was. And then Jake Gosling. And so when I looked it up, it was like, like a cheers, producer, he's worked with anybody who's anybody. Everybody Yes, just put it in. It's funny, just put it in. Well, now so, um, so I was Anouk want me to go and right, I was like, at this point, I don't even know first process of doing it, it was kind of you know, or I was sat back a little how this works. But what I did realize is I had a strong feeling for how I dance background. So I knew, like no, it needs to get and we need this here or Derrida here or we need some kind of this kind of a feel here. And I felt it actor using my, my life and my experiences my emotions for my job. It personal, so that it had an authentic story and message for the songs. So I and Matt also who's the three of them together, they're they're really well the time. Great, great team. And so I just, you know, poured my heart out and in my life. I it was a breakup with my Twin Flame. And for those of you who where there's two people who are the same two two parts of the same flame or together because of you know, whatever growth and work they have to do on their they break up and they can't be together and you meet them once every four by the way. I've got two on speed dial anyway. So they were like, well, it's it? And he you know, he wasn't fully ready to commit. And I was like, Well, We know because this is you know, I'm not waiting around. So no blame which is download, follow, put it on your playlist. It all helps with the I'm saying algorithm more than I think I will ever say my life these past few breakup. That was the first one I wrote with them and how you know, I know. I couldn't commit it was just whatever phase he was in, in his life. And so responsibility is what it is for your emotions. And yes, this happened. But with love kind of thing is what no blame is about.

Jesse:

It's really interesting that you say that because it seems to fit were spoke on, you know, changing careers, like you had to see it as a there was also a ton of positive that you knew would come out of it. So it themes in your life.

Christina Chong:

Yeah, you can say that, again, say that three times. It's really that's really that's a key thing. I think it has been key in my life, like and things that have been in my way. And yeah,

John T Bolds:

yeah, like you said, you thought it you wrote it out. You said to have a microphone going at the same time.

Christina Chong:

Yeah, so yeah, looking at the positives, and that is absolutely them, you know, all the specifics of the relationship and how we'd met before and said we met in a little city in Sicily, a fishing village in the 1800s. That was had to go away for some kind of political reason. I was always expecting distance. And so then I was left there kind of feeling abandoned, but he was So I she said, if you go to Sicily with him, I think it'd be very healing for a flight to Sicily, and I was like,"come on, we're going to Sicily." We Sicily. And nothing happened. I was like, oh, so like the be some kind of wasn't. And so we went to bed that night in that fishing village. In the middle awful panic attack, like, like, I couldn't breathe. Like I never had that balcony. I literally thought I was dying. You know that feeling when you're know, you can't catch your breath. It was there. And I was literally looking there's nobody around. I can't use my voice to get him to call an ambulance. there's no one else. It's funny now, but but there was nobody around. There was where it ends. I genuinely thought this is where it ends. Anyway, he came out. I talk. Anyway, eventually, I managed to calm myself down. But I couldn't sleep balcony, and he came out and made a bed and we slept on the balcony. But I think remembering that memory of of that trauma. I can't think what else it would panicked or anxious about anything at that time. So yeah, so that's the from. We were told we met before this

Jesse:

first line in the song,

Christina Chong:

that first line in the song. Yeah. So yeah, so all those you possible and authentic. Because with my acting, I'm always playing a character rule with this musical journey is I have to be 100% me. So I'm different versions me, but that's the one rule. And then so Jake, and Matt would lay down tracks, throughout the EP. And then, you know, keys and drums all these like real twin flames. And then me and anouk, we're working on the vocals and then first of all, normally the verse and then in chronological order actually, melody and the and the lyrics, go and record it all in one day. And that's music musicians do that, that you just couldn't go into the studio at 11 the track. It's incredible. And that's what I love about it is so instant, months, sometimes years to see any results. So yeah, it was quite of music in the bank that I haven't that I haven't decided yet when and how I'll

Jesse:

But that's again, you continue to be a consummate podcasting professional question from listener Michael,

John T Bolds:

you sure do.

Christina Chong:

What can I say?

Michael Kwan:

Hey, open pike night. This is Michael Kwan. Again. I want to her amazing work. I've been a fan since her appearance on Doctor Who as Lorna amazingly well and memorably. Thanks to another open pike Night Listener, I was what you said about using your biracial experiences in your acting struck home Chinese father and American mother. And even all these years later, there's enough to claim that reading your words reminded me self acceptance is a process blame will be up by the time this interview post. When is the full EP touring plans? And going back to Chinese heritage? What's your favorite dimsum I dumplings. Thanks,

Christina Chong:

Pa Gao. Thanks, Michael. But yeah, acceptance is a August 11. But before that, we have one more song to kind of drop in habits then with the EP, the last song comes out alongside it. And that's called I actually the whole end it wasn't planned like that. Because obviously, you know, and you just kind of see what comes out in that moment. What what's the most to write about. And we'd written no blame, then we wrote can't show love, get to choose, which is the kind of like, being in this moment, happy on, your own. And getting to that place. And then when we had those three songs, the a minute. This is like a full circle. If we wrote about the meeting and the we have the whole gamut of emotion. So So yeah, so that is coming up August 11. don't think necessarily a tour, but there will be hopefully if things go on that. And yeah, that's all the questions. Nailed it.

John T Bolds:

One more question actually about names for other songs. So there we

Celia Rose Gooding:

Hey, Chrissy, it's your cast mate I'll let you figure out you are an incredibly talented singer, dancer songwriter. And you play a on many occasion that she does not sing but if la'an did sing What would her

Christina Chong:

Oh my god Celia I Love you

Cameron:

That's actually Ethan peck.

John T Bolds:

Yeah, it was ethan I

Christina Chong:

I'm still in the forgetting oh my god Celia. I love you so La'an's song... "Khan show love" thank you you're

Jesse:

making advertising this episode so easy. Wow.

John T Bolds:

Would the with the album be "it's not believing you're gonna get you're gonna die that kills you." Yeah, exactly. That that was? Yeah,

Jesse:

I thank you both for that. That was that was really good. So we're gonna world of Star Trek and strange new worlds now. And before we get to the be amazing. I have to ask did you have a history with Star Trek before La'an

Christina Chong:

No, I didn't other than obviously being aware of it. And you watch it. But yeah, I had to do a lot homework before I got for doing the in the way of Khan, there's not so much to watch. And so and La'an being a new I got it easy. But yeah, so yeah, I wasn't but obviously now I'm a fan and I became a but because I realized what it stands for. The hope the diversity, the things that I like to aim to embody in myself so Yeah, very cool.

John T Bolds:

Well, great. That leads again right into our first callers

Tessa:

Hey boys, hey Chrissy and this is Tessa I am stem femme cosplay on this season. I did not expect to love her as much as I have so far. So you about lawn what things did you end up liking about the character that you as much? I love you guys.

Christina Chong:

Bye. Thank you so much for your question. Um, I think at first the sides that I got for the audition by the way. And whilst during the first characters a lot. These kind of sci fi I'm serious, no mess kind of get the job of I'm doing the same thing I kind of always do. And then, although I was like, I, it's the same same kind of thing. And then they gave me the trauma. the rom com, or they give me the action. I'm like, Oh, my goodness, the fact that means that now going into tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow, you really earned that right to get there. It makes her so much more relatable, I think. taking time before she can fully reveal that vulnerability. So that only really dropped, actually, I was like, oh, so that was actually great thing that I beginning is actually helps to her to be more relatable.

Jesse:

I gotta agree with that. 100% A few of our callers have mentioned that meeting another Noonien Singh, which you you immediately assuaged. But how aware character to be scrutinized at such a high level from the start?

Christina Chong:

See, that's the thing I wasn't aware, because I wasn't aware of you know, I obviously heard and seen things online, but I was like, because I any attachment to that feedback. So. So yeah, it was it was fine. And you know, since episode three of like people saying, I didn't actually like La'an, tomorrow, I love her. I was like, Oh, I didn't realize so many people didn't

Jesse:

I'm glad that that didn't enter your atmosphere. Because, I mean, we all group of fans and some of us are very specific about what we need to see on wasn't part of it. Editor's Note, we ran a little bit over time with Christina we had a chance to play every call that came in. So we are going to get through little bit quicker than the last couple.

John T Bolds:

All right, here is

Venus:

Venus. Setting a scene. I am laying on my bed. I am sitting on the phones I have like the cord twirled around my finger. I'm kicking my legs. La'an and Jim? oh my god like what are you thinking about that? I think that they might be like kind of made for each other Low key. You know? Oh my god. am Venus. Bad Butch dot cosplay on Instagram. And my girlfriend I are at some point if you want to see that.

Christina Chong:

Oh my god, Venus. That's amazing. Yes, I agree with you.

Jesse:

Very good. And now we do have a call from our friend Michelle. Here we

Michelle from Crusher Convo:

Hey, open pike night. A big thank you to Christina questions. My question kind of ties into your own experiences as a performer eclectic background, you've done dance, you've done music, you've done acting. something from your own life that you would like to see la'an Maybe take on on lighten it up?
